Jon Cutler

The globe-trotting DJ, gifted producer/remixer and Distant Music main man’s dedication to house music started when he was a teenager, when he was a familiar face seen in many of the underground clubs in New York. In the early 80’s Jon began DJing at local neighborhood house parties, but it would not be until years later that he actually gained the opportunity to spin in clubs.

DJ’ing eventually led Jon to embark on a production career and to create a studio suitable to realize that dream. After working at an independent record label for two years, he grasped the knowledge of the industry and was ready to advance. Jon’s entrepreneurial side surfaced in 1996 when he decided to start his own label called Distant Music.

Jon’s main objective was to launch a powerful catalogue incorporating many different production styles, not just his own. He soon achieved this objective, releasing cuts like ‘You Groove Me’, ‘The Harmonica Walk’ and ‘African Jive’ on Distant. In 2001 Jon produced ‘It’s Yours’ for Chez Music, which quickly assumed club anthem status. ‘It’s Yours’ reached #1 in the DJ Hype Charts and # 29 in the UK pop charts and was licensed to a string of compilations on labels including Peppermint Jam, NRK, Defected, Virgin and Hed Kandi.

Since then Jon has worked tirelessly to release quality house music, with the primary emphasis remaining on his Distant Music imprint. Earlier this year, Jon’s track ‘Runnin’ featuring Pete Simpson went to #1 in the UK Hype Chart, receiving support from the likes of Roger Sanchez, Sandy Rivera, Bob Sinclar, DJ Gregory, Louie Vega and Joey Negro to name a few. His follow up, ‘Watcha Gonna Do’ featuring Michael Watford, has enjoyed similar success. In between his hectic schedule that involves frequent international touring, Jon finds haven in his studio. After twenty years in the business Jon hopes to maintain the ability to inject his soulful flavor into the house music community.
